My Kinesiology Journey So Far

Growing up I played Badminton to a reasonably good level. I was always suffering with little niggles, aches, pains and frequent injuries. I used to go to a wonderful massage therapist and always felt incredible afterwards. Problem was the aches and pains always came back. I always ended up back on her massage table.

One day everything changed. I had overheard my dad who was a regular visitor of hers saying that she had told him that often psychological stress can be the underlying reason for much of our physical symptoms. I found this an interesting idea. Shortly after the death of my grandfather I went for a massage due to shoulder and upper body tightness. As we were talking I mentioned to her about the comment I had heard my dad make regarding the effects of psychological stress on our bodies. She confirmed the claim and I started to open up about my grandad’s passing. As I did I felt my upper body release extremely quickly. Later that day when I went home I had a massive cathartic release of tears for my beloved grandad. Again greater levels of physical and psychological relief was experienced.

This opened my mind to the incredible mind-body connection. I was around 16 at the time and I had been considering possibly studying physiotherapy or something along those lines. I decided to do Psychology and I was now really fascinated by the mind’s effect on the body.

I went to Galway University to do History and Psychology. Around this time I started to play a lot more badminton as I was living very close to Galway Lawn Tennis Club which was the epicentre of badminton in the county. Through overplaying I ended up developing a knee injury which was later diagnosed as patellar tendonitis which is basically chronic inflammation of the patellar tendon.

In search of a cure I started out with one of Ireland’s leading physiotherapists who works with elite inter-county GAA players. After months of following his protocol I ended up experiencing an improvement but I still couldn’t quiet shake of the injury.

My next attempt for recovery was energy healing. This blew my mind open to the power of complimentary healthcare approaches. I felt a phenomenal improvement but unfortunately the knee injury returned again.

At this point I resigned myself to the fact that I would have a knee injury forever. I had a dodgy knee and that was that. One day as I was mindlessly scrolling Facebook I came across a video of Kinesiology. My exposure to energy healing had already made me decide that I wanted a career in Holistic Medicine. I had left my degree behind and had enrolled in a physical therapy course. My goal was to qualify in that and then add an energy healing, nutrition based and psychological style qualifications so I could work with people in a holistic manner. Little did I know I was about to find everything I was looking for in one modality.

On arrival to my first Kinesiology session I told the practitioner that I was curious to see what this was all about and how I had struggled with an ongoing knee issue. Through his thorough investigation we found that I had leaky gut syndrome otherwise known as gut permeability syndrome. This is where the gut becomes slightly more permeable then it should be leading to substances which the body should be excreting leaking back into the system and being attacked by our immune system leading to inflammatory like symptoms. This was the root of my knee problems.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

In Kinesiology when we find an issue there is usually always either a mental, chemical, physical or energetic cause. The cause of my leaky gut was both mental and chemical. On the mental side I was still feeling some grief over my grandfather and had also been seeing a girl who I thought was interested in me only to have her cut things off all of a sudden without any clear explanation. The chemical aspect was a sensitivity to both dairy and gluten as well as cruciferous and nightshade vegetables. In order to heal my leaky gut I removed all the above foods and started taking L-Glutamine to replenish the gut and worked through my grief with the Kinesiologist. Within 3 months I was knee pain free. Thankfully I was eat nightshade and cruciferous vegetables after the leaky gut healed but to this day I am gluten and dairy free.

The day after my first session I went home and immediately called the principle of the Academy of Systematic Kinesiology and told her that I had just been for my first session and it totally blew my mind. As it happened the foundation course was beginning that following weekend in the Ardilaun Hotel which was located just 10 minutes away from where I was living in Galway at the time. I was extremely fortunate to be the only student there and got one on one tuition for the two weekends of the course. After that I chose to study the Diploma and within less than a year I opened my first practice in Galway Lawn Tennis Club. I worked there for approximately a year before the Covoid-19 Pandemic forced me to close and move home to Renvyle, Connemara.

I have always been torn between my music career and healing career, Music took priority after Covoid-19 and I went away from Kinesiology for about a 3-4 year period. I have had multiple attempts to relaunch and get things going again but in December 2024 I made the committed decision that in 2025 I was going to consistently advertise and market Kinesiology as well as the other modality I trained in called Compassionate Inquiry (upcoming blog on this).

So that’s the story of how I discovered Kinesiology. I will soon be writing a blog on my client success stories to date as well as multiple other blogs on an array of topics pertaining to my services and life experiences in holistic healing. Thanks for reading.
